Wealthy Romans watched the latest plays in public theaters and enjoyed musical performances in one another’s homes. Trips to the baths were also considered essential. In the baths, Romans enjoyed bathing, swimming, athletic “workouts”, massages, saunas, light meals, and occasional lectures on the benefits of staying in shape.
This is similar to a modern swimming pool with a weight room, and Jacuzzi. Other things they enjoyed were watching the bloody spectacles of the gladiator games in the colosseum, and also Circus Maximus where they watched chariot racing. |
The Circus Maximus was an event in which snacks and drinks were served in stalls called thermopolia. Everyone was allowed to attend. The wealthy Romans sat in a separate section that was close to the track and was comfortable. Unlike the Colosseum, where men and women sat in different sections, the seating plan in Circus Maximum allowed everyone to sit together. The Roman Poet Ovid said that Circus Maximus was the best place to meet a boyfriend or girlfriend because you would never know who was sitting next to you.
This is similar to going to a football or hockey game. |
